United States Epidemiology Graduate Schools
Epidemiology Schools offer several academic paths for students interested in public health, and the causes, prevention and control of human disease. On-campus epidemiology programs may teach students to collect medical and health data in accordance with best field practices. Then, to analyze and interpret that information to form hypotheses and proposals. Plus, students may learn in person from top educators or lecturers who are at the forefront of research in their fields.
Epidemiology School Requirements
Some epidemiology schools require applicants to masters or PhD in epidemiology programs to have a bachelors degree. Also, it is not uncommon for schools for epidemiology to expect students to have sufficient courses in mathematics and the biological and social sciences. Schools with epidemiology doctoral programs may require future students to have a graduate degree and show leadership in their field. Other materials such as GRE scores, letters of recommendation and a personal essay might also be needed. Programs vary to follow up directly for details.
Types of Graduate Epidemiology Programs
One of the things that varies within epidemiology schools is the types of graduate programs that are offered. Most epidemiology degrees are found at the graduate level - Masters, Doctorate and Certificate. That said, students can search for schools that offer epidemiology programs by degree level, then compare the syllabus to see if it matches their needs. Below are a few examples of the types of epidemiology graduate programs that may be found.
Masters in Epidemiology Programs
At the master’s level, epidemiology schools might offer one or two primary degrees in epidemiology: Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Science (MS). The MPH in epidemiology is a public health professional degree that may equip students with an overview of biostatistics, the environmental influences on health, public health policy, and health services. The MS in epidemiology tends to help students develop their research and analytical skills so that they might conduct ethical clinical trials and surveys.
PhD Epidemiology Programs
At the terminal level, graduate schools for epidemiology students might earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree. The PhD in Epidemiology is a research-based degree, while the DrPH in Epidemiology is a practitioner degree. As an advanced professional degree the DrPH may prepare students to apply theory and research methods in leadership roles.
Graduate Certificates in Epidemiology
Graduate Certificates in Epidemiology offer another path of study, designed to provide students with extra know-how and research skills in a shorter period of time. Some are for graduate students, but others may accept applicants with just a bachelor’s degree. Each epidemiology school may have its own list of certificate topics. Applied biostatistics, global health policy, and family health are some examples.
Find Accredited Epidemiology Schools
The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) is recognized by the United States Department of Education as an accreditor of graduate schools that offer public health programs. Accreditation may provide an assurance that a given degree meets certain education quality standards.
Take the Next Step
Use the on-page filters to find epidemiology schools by degree level and location. Results can be refined by city, state or country. Then, easily compare epidemiology programs. Be curious about unique concentration areas that a school might offer. Biostatistics, global health, infectious disease or cancer epidemiology are some examples. Then, use the form to request more information from the providers. This way, are one step closer to finding an epidemiology graduate school with the MS, MPH, PhD or DrPH degree that aligns with your personal and professional goals. Take the next step now!
