International Education Programs & Education Graduate Schools
Many accredited Education Graduate Schools and universities offer International Education programs that are designed for students who wish to pursue potential careers in and outside of education, whether this means teaching abroad or managing programs for a multinational organization. Residential, or on-campus programs, may be a great option for students who want the face-to-face component of studying with or being mentored by faculty members. It is not uncommon for an accredited university to have global study or internship opportunities, so your home campus may have interesting opportunities associated with it. These place students in a setting that aligns with their personal research and professional development goals.
Graduate International Education Programs: Basics

This may mean learning how to run a community-driven project such as a rural education program for high school girls or, observing teachers so that you can evaluate performance and make recommendations on how they could improve. At heart, international education programs focus on teaching and studying abroad, which means understanding different cultures, educational theories, and policies. Within this broad framework, each graduate school has its own unique features, degrees and curriculums. Some programs blend coursework in topics such as:
- Education program management
- Higher education administration
- Student affairs
- Intercultural communication
- International education practicum
- Work / manage study abroad programs colleges, universities, youth exchange programs
- Learn to provide English as a Second Language (ESL) and intensive language programs
Types of International Education Programs
Graduate-level International Education Programs are offered as Masters and PhD International Education programs. The minimum education level required to enroll is a Bachelor’s degree in Education or in another discipline. Some programs are geared to the current educator (licensed) while others are not. When evaluating programs, make sure to keep in mind the learning outcomes you need so that you can choose a supporting academic path.
Masters in International Education Programs
Commonly 2-years to complete, many universities and colleges allow working students to extend the amount of time it takes to compete their Masters in International Education. Some programs may focus more on curriculum design and developing leaders and administrators who are equipped to work in a global context. Others may emphasize examining the practices of education within specific regional settings with the intention of fostering transformation. Not quite ready for a full degree? You may be able to find International Education graduate certificates that offer a shorter term boost to your credentials and keep the door open to continued education.
Doctorate International Education Programs
Doctoral-level International Education programs tend to focus on research, since PhD candidates usually have to write a dissertation based on original thought. Earning a terminal degree in education is typically considered the qualification needed to teach at the university level, conduct advanced research, advise policy makers and work as university dean or provost.

Research topics: Are you interested in humanitarian action within education? Are you business-minded and drawn to the economics of education? Do you care to develop education policy in refugee camps? Graduate schools have different fascinating faculty, projects and curriculums. Do some homework to see which school is investigating subjects that you are passionate about.
Study Abroad/Intern Abroad: Some graduate schools have study abroad or intern abroad opportunities that are unique to their university. Worth evaluating.

Often a university will post some interesting information about graduates of an International Education Program and it could be useful to see whether they are working somewhere you identify with. The degree is not a guarantee, but it could provide targeted skills for working in a specific milieu. Are they instructional systems specialists[i] or advocates of gender equality in school systems[ii]?
