What Might I Learn in an On-Campus ECommerce and Social Media Graduate Programs?
Through on-campus graduate programs in social media and e-commerce, students typically explore electronic business in-depth. Social media, which are tools that help people, companies, and organizations create, share, and exchange information in virtual networks and communities, depend on web-based technologies and interactive platforms to share content.[i] Over time, social media have made substantial and pervasive changes to how businesses, organizations, and people communicate.[ii] E-commerce, one component of social media, includes the electronic platforms and tools that businesses, organizations, and people use to trade products or services.[iii] To varying degrees, graduate-level certificates and degrees strive to teach students how to create, manage, and market social media and e-commerce platforms, tools, and technologies.
Students in e-commerce and social media programs typically have the opportunity to develop their technical knowledge in areas such as computer science and information systems. More specifically, they may explore subjects such as programming, software engineering, and database technologies. Students may also develop their knowledge in areas of business such as marketing, finance, and communications.
Through their studies, students may learn how to apply their knowledge to develop, manage, and grow e-businesses and social environments.
What Types of Social Media Degrees and E-Commerce Degrees Can I Pursue On-Campus?
Students might pursue social media and e-commerce education through any of three primary programs: a graduate certificate program, a master’s degree program, or a doctorate degree program. Following is a brief description of each:
Social Media and E-Commerce Certificate Programs
Students typically earn graduate-level certificates within one year of fulltime study. Program lengths vary by school. These four- to six-course programs usually engage students in an introductory study of social media and e-commerce’s technical and business components. Courses in certificate programs may cover subjects such as e-commerce, systems architecture, computer programming, client-server computing, and more. Students might also study components of social media management and marketing electronically. Certificate programs generally intend to introduce students to a particular subject or help them specialize their knowledge in a particular area. While many certificate programs in social media and e-commerce are offered online, students may also find on-campus options.
The Master’s in Social Media and E-Commerce Degree
Students typically pursue one of two types of e-commerce and social media master’s degrees: the Master of Science or the Master of Business Administration (MBA). More specific titles of degrees within these designations include:
- The MBA with an emphasis in social media or e-commerce
- The Master of Science in Information Systems
- The Master of Science in Information Technology
- The Master of Science in E-Business Management
- The Master of Science in E-Commerce with an emphasis on social media marketing
- The Master of Science in Social Media with an emphasis on e-commerce
These are just some of the e-commerce and social media master’s degrees you might pursue on campus.
Students typically earn their master’s degree in these areas and others through one to two years of intensive or fulltime study, although program lengths vary by school. You can learn more about e-commerce and social media master’s degree programs here.
The Doctorate in Social Media and E-Commerce Degree
There are two primary types of e-commerce and social media doctorate degrees: the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The DBA typically emphasizes business as it relates to social media and e-commerce, and the PhD typically emphasizes social media and e-commerce technology, management, and marketing. What you’ll study in your DBA or PhD program, however, depends on your particular program.
Both of these doctorate-level programs are likely to be research-intensive and emphasize curricula that teaches students how to develop and manage e-business applications and solutions. Students in doctorate programs may also learn how to use research to evolve and innovate components of e-commerce and social media.
Students typically earn their doctorate degree on campus through four to six years of fulltime study. Program lengths vary by school. In most cases, students conclude their programs by presenting and defending a dissertation and taking a comprehensive exam.
As you’re exploring your options for on-campus social media and e-commerce programs, remember that these subjects primarily exist under two broader fields: business and technology. Therefore, many schools offer programs in social media and e-commerce through their business, computer science, and other technological departments.
What Knowledge and Skills Might I Develop in My E-commerce and Social Media Graduate Program?
As you engage in your social media and e-commerce certificate, master’s degree, or doctorate degree program, you’re likely to have a chance to develop your knowledge in areas such as e-business technology; e-commerce marketing; and e-commerce website design, functionality, and development. Meanwhile, you may develop the skills to write and operate technical strategies, use a broad range of digital management and marketing techniques, and navigate a global digital environment. In master’s and doctorate programs, you may develop your abilities to conduct research, write academic papers, and make presentations. The extent to which you develop knowledge and skills in these and other areas depends, of course, on the duration of your program.
