Online PhD Counseling Psychology Programs typically require students to hold a relevant masters degree to apply. Some may even ask for prior research or professional experience. Counseling psychology PhD programs are often research-oriented and emphasize scholarship. A more clinical alternative for patient-focused students may be the PsyD.

Online Counseling Psychology Graduate Programs
Counseling psychology graduate programs focus on the emotional, social, work, school and physical health concerns that people experience within their personal and interpersonal dealings throughout life. Online graduate counseling courses may discuss anything from stress and anxiety to severe psychological issues. Counseling Psychology is recognized by the American Psychological Association (APA) as a health service provider specialty within the broader context of psychology.i
To practice as a licensed counseling psychologist, typical requirements include holding a Ph.D. in Psychology or a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree, completing an internship, completing at least 1 to 2 years of supervised professional experience, and passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.ii

Online Counseling Programs
Online Graduate Counseling Programs are human-centric programs that focus on counseling and therapy practice. They tend not to emphasize psychology research as heavily as counseling psychology programs. This category also includes many different concentration areas including art therapy, substance abuse counseling, marriage and family therapy, career counseling, and more.
In the field, counselors may be licensed clinicians with advanced degrees in counseling such as Mental Health Counseling or Rehabilitation Counseling.v In both of these examples, entry level employment would typically require a masters degree and 2,000 to 4,000 hours of post-degree supervised clinical experience. Counselors may also need to pass a state-recognized exam and maintain their licensure through annual continuing education credits.vi
Online Therapy Graduate Programs
The term “therapy” may include all different types of Psychologists, Licensed Social Workers, Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists. That said, several online degree programs may offer pathways to the protected title of therapist. These include but are not limited to Online Psychology Masters Programs, Online Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy, Online Master of Social Work, Online Masters in Counseling or a doctorate in any of those fields.
Therapists may be required to be licensed in the state where they practice. In many cases, this requires a masters degree and about 2,000 to 4,000 hours of post-degree supervised clinical experience. However, this may vary by state. Aspiring therapists may also need to pass a licensure exam, and maintain that credential by earning continuing education credits every year.v

Accreditation and Licensure
Because the fields of counseling and psychology may be regulated by your state, some students choose to make sure their selected online counseling degree aligns with the requirements in their home state. One element that could make a difference in your decision is program accreditation. Depending on the type of degree you choose and the school offering it, your program may be accredited by a few different institutions.
For psychology: The American Psychological Association (APA) accredits doctoral programs in counseling psychology, but does not accredit institutions.vii Additionally, if you wish to pursue a license to practice psychology, many states require that the doctoral program you attend meet the designating criteria of the joint Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB)viii /National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology (NR).
