Indiana Biology Graduate Schools
Biology Graduate Schools provide courses of study that might lead to a Master of Science (MS), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), or post-masters certificate. The biological sciences span biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, genetics, and genomics.
There are also graduate schools for biology majors who want to earn their degree in science, mathematics, and engineering.
Requirements for Biology Graduate Schools & Programs
Students who apply to biology graduate schools for their masters program need an accredited bachelors degree in biology, biochemistry, or a closely related discipline. They may also be asked what topics they want to research, and perhaps, which faculty they hope to collaborate with.
Students who apply to a PhD program may need to show that they have research experience, and/or a MS degree with a thesis. Other material (e.g. GRE scores, GPA) varies, although some programs are quite selective.
Masters in Biology Programs
Most schools offer their Masters in Biological Sciences degree programs with a thesis or non-thesis option. In some universities, the non-thesis option can be completed in one year. Since the thesis option includes a research component, it might take a full-time student about two years to complete.
Also, most MS Biology programs have different tracks. Human biology, ecosystems, microbiology, water management or genetics are a few examples. These focal points might be a great differentiator between universities.
One school may have a program that mirrors a research interest, another where viewpoints might be expanded through lab rotations with a variety of faculty members. Or, the university might favor inter-departmental collaboration.
PhD in Biology Programs
Biology graduate schools with Biology PhD programs may offer joint MD/PhD or MS/PhD programs. While it might take the average full-time PhD student
about six years to complete their degree, this is a variable. PhD candidates often have the freedom to pursue a variety of topics to make connections between different fields and scientific approaches for their dissertation.
These areas might span cell biology, developmental biology, physiology, neuroscience, animal behavior, plant biology, genomics, computational biology, evolution, ecology, and biodiversity. Within that framework, a school’s faculty and facilities may lend specific appeal.
Graduate Certificate in Biology
Post-masters certificates in biology typically target about five or six courses. Some students use the credits to help them fulfill state biology teacher certification requirements. Others, to add onto current skills.
Why Consider a Biological Sciences Degree?
One of the main goals of a graduate-level biological sciences degree are to familiarize students with current research in biology. This is done through advanced courses, seminars, and original research experiences with faculty supervision.
To this end, university biology departments and their laboratories, often conduct unique experiments and research. As a result, students who pursue their MS or PhD on-campus may benefit from mentorship and lots of hands-on practice in their university’s laboratories.
Find Accredited Biology Graduate Schools
Many regionally accredited biology graduate schools have research centers on and off-site. You can search by location –city, state or country to find a campus with the features that matter to you. And, refine your results by Masters, PhD, or Certificate.
