Applied mathematicians use theories and techniques, such as mathematical modeling and computational methods, to formulate and solve practical problems in business, government, engineering, and the physical, life, and social sciences.

In private industry, candidates for mathematician jobs typically need a Ph.D., although there may be opportunities for those with a master's degree. Most of the positions designated for mathematicians are in research-and-development laboratories, as part of technical teams. Graduate degrees in mathematics lend themselves to positions such as statistician, physicist, economist, computer scientist, engineer, actuary, and operations research analyst. Industries populated by graduates of this program include military, political, financial or law enforcement.

Mathematics Future Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2012 there were 3,500 mathematicians employed nationwide. Employment in mathematicians is expected to grow by 23 percent between 2012 and 2022, much faster than the national average. 

Mathematician Salary

In 2012 the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that mathematicians earned a median annual salary of $101,360.  The top 10% of earners made more than $152,950, while the bottom 10% of earners made less than $56,040.  Many mathematicians are employed by research and development service organizations, manufacturing companies, the federal government, in management of companies or enterprises, and in educational services.  The graph below provides 2012 median annual salary data for mathematicians employed in select industries.
