Why Earn a Masters in English?
Studying for a masters in English (MA in English) will introduce you to topics relating to literature, writing, and language. Graduate studies in English can result in a master’s degree or a Ph.D. Those pursuing a master’s degree generally do so prior to pursuing a Ph.D. However, teachers, librarians and editors may also pursue a master in english as a terminal degree. MA in English Programs and Curriculum

A masters in English can often qualify individuals to obtain teaching positions at the high school and community college level. How Long Does It Take to Get a Masters in English?
A MA in English takes approximately two to three years to complete. The degree usually requires many research papers as well as a final thesis.
Earning a Ph.D. in English takes approximately five to seven years. Graduation requirements vary among school programs. Typically, Ph.D.’s are awarded upon completion of oral and written exams and a final dissertation based on the student’s particular area of focus. Unlike master’s programs, Ph.D. students are usually encouraged to develop an area of expertise. Some Ph.D.
programs may offer their students teaching and research assistantships and fellowships. Often, teaching assistantships and fellowships help defray the cost of tuition.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics post-secondary teachers (college professors) earned a median annual salary of $72,470 in 2014. The 2014 median salaries for elementary, middle, and high school teachers were $54,550, $55,860, and $57,200 respectively.
The BLS states the 2014 median salary for Librarians was $56,880 per year. Editors earned a median salary of $56,010, journalists earned a median salary of $37,720, and writers earned a median salary of $58,850.
