United States Communication Studies Masters Campus Programs
Schools for Masters in Communication Studies offer courses of study that could award either a Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS) degree. The communication studies major explores the various ways humans communicate - verbal, non-verbal and written. Students could take away an ability to read, write, listen, report, measure, predict and interpret various types of messages and information in an effective way.
Communication Studies Masters Programs
Graduate schools for Masters in Communication Studies offer several different types of programs due to the broad nature of the field. Communication Studies is about how humans interact and interpret messages. Communications, by contrast, is about how these messages are distributed. Both these themes might be discussed in communication studies masters programs, so be on the look-out for the type of program that matches your goals.
Courses and Curricula
Most schools for Masters in Communication Studies start students out with core courses that survey major theories and points of view on the influence of mass media, behavior and social processes. These classes are likely to examine how messages are interpreted in social, political, cultural, corporate or marketing contexts.
Aside from theory, students could study how to apply communication ‘best practices’ and build communication tool-kits with specific techniques. For instance, a course in digital media could provide the modern communicator with ideas on how to create credible websites or effective internet ads.
For students with more interest in technique than theory, some Masters in Communication programs are oriented to media technologies. Here students might delve into marketing, print media, bioethics or public policy.
Areas of Emphasis
Some Schools for Masters in Communication Studies provide several tracks if you want to gain a deeper grasp of a selected area of emphasis. Emphases vary by school, but could include the ones listed below.

A concentration could help to align your coursework with an interest or career goal. At the same time, you could hone skills and knowledge like persuasion and critical analysis that are pertinent to your field.

Apply to Schools for Masters in Communication Studies
All schools for Masters in Communication studies have their own guidelines for admission requirements. Most of them presume you have a bachelors degree and that you earned it at an accredited college or university. Most also set a minimum GPA at 3.0. Some, but not all, schools may want to see scores for the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), or the general aptitude portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). You could also be asked to furnish letters of reference, resume, and personal essay. Where the test scores are not needed, you may still have to show prospective schools that you are strong in research, analysis and writing. Contact advisors for specific admission criteria.
