While course topics vary, possible core subjects are listed below.
Expert InsightWe asked CEO Deborah Sweeney at MyCorporation, on how she's applied her MBA in her profession:
My MBA has been invaluable in the ownership of my business. I leverage my learnings about P&Ls, Commission structures, organizational and team management, and employment law. I use my training from business school every day.
Professional MBA programs (PMBAs) are designed for working students to keep their jobs while they pursue their degree. Some of these programs can be completed in as little as two and a half years. Classes meet after work or on weekends. Students usually take about two classes per term, due to the part-time nature of the program. This type of MBA program often suits individuals with three to seven years of work experience.
One-Year MBA programs are typically for recent graduates and those with working experience. Students with an undergraduate degree or minor in business may completed their program in as little as one year. Students with a non-business Bachelors degree usually must complete pre-MBA courses prior to the start date. Some business administration graduate schools offer the One Year MBA with an accounting track. This may be ideal for students who are preparing to meet the 150-hour CPA requirement.
Executive MBA programs (EMBAs) are accelerated programs for the experienced professional. Applicants may need to have seven or so years of work history. The specifics vary between schools. In some schools, an accelerated MBA is a one-year intensive full-time program. However, in other schools, time to completion may be less than two years.

Since everyone has personal preferences, you should keep yours in mind. Business Administration graduate schools have their own look, feel, student life and services. But aside from that, you may want to think about a few key points.
Have you heard someone say they earned their MBA in Finance? Business Administration graduate schools often have unique ‘tracks’ or concentrations. These allow students to gain more depth in one area. A few examples follow.
Are you looking for an MS degree at a local university? Would it excite you to earn your MBA degree in another city, state or abroad? Find Business Administration Graduate Schools by location using the filter on the menu bar. Many schools have partnerships with local businesses, and there is often student housing.
Many Business Administration Graduate Schools are regionally accredited. There are six regional agencies to look for, each recognized by the Department of Education.
Accreditation is something a school submits to voluntarily. It is a process of external review that considers a school’s mission, faculty, and curricula. For the business grad student, finding an accredited university could mean trusting their degree is legitimate. It may indicate that the learning material is relevant and not outdated. It is a stamp of outside approval to look for.
Once a university has earned accreditation, it might take the process further. It could then seek ‘specialized’ or ‘programmatic’ accreditation for their disciplines (such as an MBA program). This type of accreditation might matter to future employers. It reflects that the student earned their degree in a program that passed rigorous standards itself.
The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is one such specialized accreditor, and there are 777 business schools in 52 countries and territories that have earned AACSB accreditation.ii Their website has a database of the schools that have earned their accreditation. The AACSB is the oldest of the accreditors for MBA programs. Other accreditors for MBA programs and business schools might include the following.
Independent research might help you figure out what type of accreditation is appropriate for your studies. You may also need to understand accreditation when you evaluate business administration school reputation.
