Program Description:

The Women's Studies Program facilitates research and course development about women and gender-related issues, coordinates the interdisciplinary Women's Studies undergraduate and graduate instructional programs, and works with local, state, and national groups on issues of importance to women. UWM was the first campus in the UW System to initiate a Women's Studies program in 1974. Today, students at UWM can pursue an undergraduate Women's Studies major and minor, a Masters in Women's Studies, a Graduate Certificate through the Graduate School, and a joint Masters in Women's Studies and Library and Information Studies. Currently Women's Studies offers over 100 core and cross-listed courses drawn from over thirty departments on campus, taught by over 90 affiliated faculty and staff members. Approximately 4,000 students enroll in Women's Studies courses each year. Why Study Women's Studies? Because it can help you to identify and assess gender-based assumptions and biases and to recognize their social, cultural and individual consequences. Because it can teach you to analyze and integrate perspectives and bodies of knowledge across disciplines, and develop your critical thinking skills in ways that will complement and enhance your training in any other field. Because it can prepare you for graduate study or for careers in non-profit organizations, businesses, the creative arts, education, government and public policy, journalism, law, social work, and more. Because Women's Studies can empower you to participate in public debate and act for social change.
