Program Description:

North Cascades Institute and Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the Environment offer a Master of Education residency program focused on Environmental Education.

For the first five quarters, you will live, learn and study in the heart of North Cascades National Park, with a home base of the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center. Your final two quarters of coursework  are on campus at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.

Practice teaching and coordinating programs with North Cascades Institute and complete coursework in teaching, natural history, non-profit administration, curriculum, conservation, and environmental education. Earn a Master of Education degree from Western Washington University and Certificates of Northwest Natural History and Nonprofit Leadership and Administration from North Cascades Institute.

Explore the diverse North Cascades ecosystem through field excursions, backpacking, and canoeing. Take courses and complete practical projects in natural history, curriculum, nonprofit administration, and environmental education. Practice teaching skills with a variety of age groups by teaching North Cascades Institute programming. Coordinate educational programming with North Cascades Institute and other area organizations and agencies. Teachers and mentors are professors from Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the environment, U.S. Forest Service wildlife specialists, National Park rangers and researchers, professional naturalist educators, nonprofit administration professionals, and other community change-makers.

North Cascades Institute offers scholarships for students with economic need, merit-based scholarships, and a Scholarship of Diversity in Environmental Education and Conservation. Students are encouraged to apply for Federal Student Aid for work study eligibility and/or loan eligibility and offer resources for students to apply for a wide variety of outside scholarships.
