Classes held at GW's Graduate Education Center, Arlington, VA Cities and their close-in suburbs, such as the Washington DC metro area, with extensive public transportation infrastructure, are poised for continued growth. As these urban centers grow and become more densely populated, there is a new focus on making urban living environmentally sustainable. There is and will continue to be an increasing need for trained urban planners with strong skills in the emerging field of sustainability. The George Washington University College of Professional Studies graduate certificate in Urban Sustainability will arm you with the skills and education you will need to advance in this rapidly evolving industry. The mission of the six-course, 18-credit Graduate Certificate in Urban Sustainability is to provide an innovative and relevant curriculum with a focus on applying sustainability to major issues in city and regional planning. The Certificate is ideal for experienced professionals working in the field, who need a refresher in the skills that support sustainable urban living, and also for those new to the field, who want to master its challenges in order to jump-start careers in this emerging industry. Two of the six courses are core planning courses that prepare the students to earn their professional certification, administered by the American Planning Association through its American Institute of Certified Planners, AICP. The Graduate certificate in Urban Sustainability will allow you to: -understand and apply the basic principles, history, and development of the planning profession -understand the interconnection between economics and planning -integrate sustainability into community planning, transportation, and land use in students’ designs -demonstrate capabilities through hands-on learning experiences. STACKABLE GRADUATE CREDENTIALS Earn the 18-credit Graduate Certificate in Urban Sustainability or combine this Certificate with four Core Planning Courses and the Graduate Certificate in Climate Change Management and Policy OR The Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Landscapes to earn the Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Sustainable Urban Planning.
