Program Description:

Fifth Year Masters (BS/MS) The Biology department offers the potential for a fifth year Masters degree as part of a BS/MS program, which requires the student complete 6 graduate credits in addition to their undergraduate degree requirements. Contact the Biology graduate advisor (Dr. Guillermo Orti) during the student's Junior year to apply Masters Degree (MS) Each masters degree program includes course work and may include a thesis, and is designed by the student in consultation with a departmental adviser. Please note that Graduate Teaching Assistantships are not available to MS students. The masters degree with thesis requires: -Twenty-four credit hours -Thesis (6 credits) based on original research -Satisfactory completion of final comprehensive examination The non-thesis masters degree requires: -Thirty-six credit hours -Satisfactory completion of final comprehensive examination For a description of the requirements for the Master's Degree see the Columbian College's Graduate Bulletin website. Doctor of Philosophy Degree Each doctoral program is formulated by the student in consultation with an advisory committee. A completed degree requires 72 course credits, including 12-24 credits of dissertation research. A previously completed M.S. serves as the equivalent of 24 credit hours (i.e., students with a MS need to register for 48 hours to complete the PhD course requirements). Course work is designed to prepare the student for general examinations in three or more fields relevant to the major area of interest. Following these exams, the student undertakes dissertation research under the guidance of a dissertation director. The final examination is an oral defense of the dissertation.
