Master of Arts in Education

Program Description:

In Goddard’s Master of Arts in Education, you choose your topic of inquiry and design a program of study based on how you learn best and what your study can contribute most to you and your community. Goddard invites you to think about your topic by drawing in other pertinent fields of study, which in turn allows you to see a wider view of the practices and theories inherent in your topic of study. Such a view enables you to create a more holistic thesis project, and enables you to learn more in the process about your life, your challenges and your gifts.

CONCENTRATIONS

Students pursuing the Master of Arts in Education may also choose the following study options:

The Community Education concentration is appropriate for both skilled practitioners and those interested in pursuing study in the field of community education. Goddard recognizes each student’s community as a learning laboratory.

The Dual Language Early Childhood Education concentration is suited for early childhood, preschool, and Head Start educations; education coordinators and curriculum developers; teacher educators and coaches; and artists studying the intersection of language, culture, and teaching involving young children.

Teacher Licensure is for applicants seeking public school educator credentials. Teacher Licensure is offered through the Vermont Agency of Education for those completing the Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts degree, as well as non-degree-seeking post-baccalaureate or postgraduate studies. A Vermont Teacher License has reciprocity in many other states through Interstate Certification Compact.

The School Counseling Licensure concentration is for applicants seeking public school counseling credentials. The MA in Education with Licensure in School Counseling is a 48-credit concentration requiring four semesters. Students without an appropriate academic background may need more than four semesters to complete state licensure and degree requirements.

The Bilingual Education endorsement authorizes educators to teach students who are English Language Learners (ELL) and/or native English speakers in both English and Spanish.

Concentrations predefine inter- and trans-disciplinary areas of study through a core set of readings and resources, learning areas and key concepts, and specify the way in which students must complete an identity statement and engage with the community through practicum, internship, fieldwork, or engaged practice. Concentrations within the program are highly individualized, guided by a unique study plan, developed by each student, to address learning needs and professional goals.

LOW-RESIDENCY MODEL

The Master of Arts in Education is offered in Goddard’s unique low-residency model, which removes the barriers between living your life and learning. In our low-residency model, each semester begins with an eight-day residency in either Plainfield, Vermont or Seattle, Washington. Following the residency, there are 16 weeks of independent work and self-reflection in close collaboration with a faculty advisor and course mentors.
