M.Ed. in Secondary Education
Teachers who have completed this degree have become department chairs, trainers of other teachers, strategists, and recognized master teachers. Many districts offer higher salaries for teachers with the M.Ed. degree.
Persons who enroll in this program typically plan to remain in the classroom or, in some cases, become a teacher of teachers within their school or district. Their purpose in acquiring the degree is to improve their skills in delivery of content, add to their knowledge of content, and to improve the level of student achievement in their classes.
There are two options available: One is for those who desire to specialize and select a minor, and one is for those who specialize and also write a thesis. One or two of the following specialization areas may be selected: Art, biology, chemistry, Educational Technology, English, French, health and kinesiology, history, mathematics, Mathematics Education, music, Physics, political science, Reading, science (SCIS), Spanish, Theater, Science Education (EDSC), Mathematics Education (EDMA), chemistry.
Note that in most specialization areas you must have either a minor or a major in your undergraduate degree or permission of the specific UTPA department to enroll in graduate classes in that department. You must have permission to enroll in Chemistry courses. There are a few exceptions. Please discuss your planned program with the Graduate Advisor before enrolling in a specialization area.
