Program Description:

48-hour M.Ed. School Counselor Track: Upon completion of the School Counselor Certification Track the counselor is prepared to be an integral part of the academic services in public schools, trained to facilitate the growth and learning of students by providing services in guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning and systems support. The counselor also provides direct services to students as a counselor; and coordinates services with programs and agencies within the school and in the community. 60-hour M.Ed. Licensed Professional Counselor Track: This degree track consists of 60 hours of course work and practicum hours. When courses and practicum hours are completed the student is eligible to take the National Counselor’s Examination and the Jurisprudence Examination. Once they complete the course work and these two exams then they apply with the state of Texas for their temporary license. When they get their temporary license they are considered to be Licensed Professional Counselor-Interns. As Interns they are then required to complete 3000 hours of direct and indirect service under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor. Once they complete the 3000 hours under supervision they submit all the necessary paper work to the state to receive their permanent license. When all this has been approved by the State of Texas, this is when they become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
