The Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion, and Recreation provide students the option of selecting a research track leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a major in biology with a research concentration in Exercise Physiology.The program maintains state-of-the-art research and computer labs that provide practical experience in observation and using sophisticated data analysis software.
Coursework for this program stems from the Departments of Educational Psychology, and Kinesiology, Health Promotion, and Recreation. Students learn research design and methodology associated with the field of sport and exercise psychology, including Applied Sport Psychology, Health and Exercise Psychology, and Social Psychology of Sport. Students gain practical experience that pertains to intervention and program development, effectiveness, and evaluation in sport, exercise, physical rehabilitation, performing arts, and military environments.
Students in this program experience the research process, including intervention development, study design, methods of evaluation, data collection and management, statistical analysis, professional consulting, scientific presentations and writing, and grantsmanship. Students also have the opportunity to gain valuable experience teaching at the college level. This program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in academia, or research-based, non-profit and government agencies.
