Why Texas?

Graduate schools in Texas provide an interesting range of options depending on where you decide stop for Tex-Mex. From big-name universities like Texas Tech to small, rural colleges, the opportunities to excel in business, agriculture, technology and medicine (to name a few) are available throughout the state. Although Texas has more land mass than some nations — including every country in Europe — there is a distinct comradery that brings all Texans together no matter where you go. That is, keeping in mind two friendly bias: barbecue and football. Everyone has an opinion on “Texas-style” barbecue and who does it best. Barbecue varies in the way it’s cooked, sliced and served across county lines. The most common method is the Central Texas way of cooking meat (hopefully brisket) low and slow over indirect heat. West Texas is more similar to grilling, cooking over direct heat; East Texas meat is typically chopped and served on a bun. Famous barbecue joints include the Pecan Lodge in Dallas, Franklin Barbecue in Austin and Gatlin’s BBQ & Catering in Houston. But part of the fun is discovering your own saucy gem and waiting in a line that wraps around the corner with hungry patrons. If you’re a sports buff, or personal friends with Troy Aikman, you know Texas takes their football very seriously. On the professional stage, the Dallas Cowboys are known as “America’s Team” and the new AT&T Stadium in Arlington, known as Jerry World after owner Jerry Jones, has space for 80,000 fans — the fifth largest stadium in the National Football League. In Houston, more than 70,000 Texan fans pack the NRG Stadium. At the collegiate level there is no shortage of teams to cheer for including Baylor, TCU, Texas and Texas A&M. And, of course, it all starts at the high school level: The love for Texas football inspired the movie and television show Friday Night Lights.
Fun Fact There are 54 Fortune 500 companies with their corporate headquarters in Texas.

Live and Learn in the Lone Star State

The promise of Southern charm and sweet-tea culture has brought many companies, businesses and colleges to all corners of Texas. For prospective graduate students looking for a more urban experience, Texas is home to numerous cities that offer a metropolitan vibe and amenities. Here are three favorites:
  1. Austin
  2. Dallas
  3. Houston
Austin, the capital of Texas, has become a destination for live music and artists of all genres. As the fourth most populated city in Texas, Austin has been on the steady incline with the business and tech world too: Apple, eBay, and Google all have regional offices and headquarters here. Although there is a strong city-wide initiative to keep independent and local businesses the norm. And the city is home to the largest urban bat population. Weird indeed. Dallas: By the numbers, the city boasts 4.6 million people, 12,000 dining options and access to more than 2,000 flights a day out of DFW airport. Recently, Dallas has seen a revitalization in neighborhoods like the Bishops Arts District and the chic Design District not far from downtown. The city of Irving—just south of the airport—recently opened the Toyota Music Factory that boasts a state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor pavilion for live entertainment in addition to shopping, dining and new developments. Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S. and still home to the award-winning Space Center. For all things art and culture, the Museum District boasts theatres and the Natural Museum of Science; honky-tonks, wine bars and impressive dining in downtown, Midtown and Washington Avenue. Bonus: you’re less than an hour to the beach.
Did you know? Texas leads the nation in cattle, cotton, hay, sheep, goats and mohair production, and leads in the number of ranches and farms covering about 130.2 million acres. Texas also has more women and minority farm operations than any other state in the nation.

Getting Around

Commuting through these more popular cities can be challenging, however public transportation like the DART system in Dallas and Austin’s walkable layout make getting around town more accessible. Or rent a car and sit in traffic. Everybody’s doing it.

Texas Weather

Some like it hot, and if you do — you’ll love Texas. The summers are bright, sunny, and humid and temperatures can reach beyond 100 degrees. Severe weather is common with the threat of tornados and flooding in low-lying areas. Winters are generally mild; January is the coldest month with an average of 45 degrees. (Note: if there’s a threat of snow, stock up on groceries and hunker down. Texas does not have salt trucks.)

Famous Festivals

Another reason to don a pair of cowboy boots: Texas boasts some of the most impressive celebrations in the country.
  1. SXSW Festival: The South by Southwest (SXSW) fest was founded in 1987 in Austin and has become the standard for emerging and well known live music acts and conferences that explore the intersection of film and music. Why people went last year: to witness Keith Urban’s glorious mane in person and stalk Bill Murray down in a dive bar; March 9-18 2019.
  2. State Fair of Texas: You had us at Funnel Cake Bacon Queso Burger. The food at the fair is legendary and each year gets more outrageous at the Big Texas Choice Awards for the most unique dish. Also festive: live entertainment, livestock and photo ops with Big Tex himself; September 28-October 21, 2018.
  3. Texas Renaissance Festival: Hundreds of thousands of visitors dressed up like barbarians, jesters and sword fighters converge In Plantersville for a celebration that is so large, they consider it a theme park; September 29-November 25, 2018.
Did you know? Two of the state’s publicly funded universities – the University of Texas–Austin and its former rival Texas A&M University–College Station – are among the largest universities in the country. And in addition to large research universities, Texas is home to many midsize colleges, small liberal arts schools and several notable private colleges and universities according to a world report from U.S. News.
