Professional Science Master's in Data Management and Analysis
The PSM initiative began in 1997 when a select number of research universities, with the support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, developed programs integrating science and mathematics studies with knowledge and training in management, law, or other professional arenas. In 2001, the Council of Graduate Schools began its promotion of the PSM by partnering with Sloan to extend this initiative to a number of master’s focused institutions and in January 2006, CGS assumed primary responsibility from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for supporting and promoting the PSM Initiative.
PSM degree programs are designed to allow students to pursue advanced training in science or mathematics while developing workplace skills valued by employers. Schools offering PSM programs assert that they produce well-rounded science professionals who have a deep knowledge of their subject but also have the ability to communicate effectively and manage projects.
Intended as an alternative to research-focused doctoral programs, PSM programs normally consist of two years of study in a designated science or mathematics discipline, but also contain a professional component that provides a fundamental education in professional fields such as communications, policy, business or law.
In late April, 2013, Austin Peay State University was approved to offer a PSM degree with concentrations in Data Management and Analysis and in Predictive Analytics. The Computer Science and Information Systems Department will manage the first concentration while the Department of Mathematics and Statistics will manage the second. Implementation is scheduled for Fall, 2013.
The PSM will be a fully online degree program. The concentrations in Data Management and Analysis, and Predictive Analytics are ideal for individuals with a B.S. degree, a position in industry or the military, and the desire to advance their career by obtaining a technical degree. The reasons for offering the degree fully online is to provide the opportunity for students to obtain the PSM while continuing to hold their jobs and to make the program accessible to a nationwide audience.
