M.S. in Education
We offer a 33 cr. hour sequence of courses leading to a master's degree with recommendation to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for K-12 added certification as a reading specialist. Applicants must currently hold some other PA teaching certificate and have completed an initial preparation program that included at least 12 weeks of full-time student teaching. Successful completion of the concentration requires candidates to complete all required courses and pass the state-mandated Praxis reading specialist test.
Our second concentration, Teaching Children's Literature P-12 requires applicants to hold a current teaching certificate, including the initial preparation of at least 12 weeks of full-time student teaching, but does not lead to advanced certification. This concentration will provide graduate students the opportunity for in-depth study of literature including extensive genre study, research in the field of children's literature, and strategies for effective teaching of children's literature to children from birth to young adulthood.
Middle States Commission on Higher Education & NCATE. The Reading Specialist concentration is nationally recognized by the International Reading Association (IRA) as an advanced preparation program.
