Master's of Science in Chemistry (includes research component), Master's of Arts in Chemistry (coursework only), Ph.D. in Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry at Portland State University offers Ph.D., M.S., and M.A. degrees. Feel free to examine the research descriptions from our faculty profiles where you will find research programs spanning topics such as biological chemistry, materials science, environmental chemistry, natural products chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, prebiotic chemistry, drug design and development, nanoscience, and many more.
Graduate studies at PSU are enhanced by many exciting opportunities. Our department has benefited by recent acquisitions of state-of-the-art instrumentation including new 600 and 400 MHz NMR Spectrometers. We have recently hired faculty in biological, organic, and materials chemistry.
Additionally, our department enjoys active collaborations with other local research institutions such as OHSU, the VA Hospital, and OGI (now part of OHSU). In particular, we have fostered strong ties to local and statewide research initiatives including Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) and the Oregon Translational research and Drug Development Institute (OTRADI). Financial support for all these research activities are too numerous to list, but is highlighted by major grants from NIH, NSF, NASA, NOAA and the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust.
We invite you to visit our department. You will find our students, staff, and faculty to be friendly and accessible. Importantly, you will get a glimpse of what it is like to study at a outstanding university that has all the advantages of being located in a major city, but is surrounded by the beauty and unlimited recreational opportunities of the Pacific Northwest.
