Program Description:

Open doors

In our master’s program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), you’ll open the door to a world of opportunity for refugees, immigrants, international students and other English language learners. You’ll deepen your understanding of the Bible and gain teaching experience in our on-campus ESOL program. And by the time you graduate, you’ll be prepared to teach in colleges, universities, mission organizations and language schools across the globe.

Program features

  • 37 semester credit hours
  • Classes meet twice per week
  • No GRE score required for admission
  • Students learn how to integrate faith with educational practice
  • Students spend time observing a variety of ESL classrooms and reflecting on their observations.
  • Students have the option to participate in a weeklong English Bible Camp in Kobe, Japan, as an overseas practicum.
  • We provide on-campus teaching practice through Multnomah’s Community ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program. Students teach English classes for international adults in our local community.

Program outcomes

Linguistic Knowledge

Demonstrate deep understanding of concepts and components of linguistics. Utilize and synthesize current language acquisition theory and research.

Pedagogical Skill

Incorporate theoretical foundations with practical approaches for teaching each language skill area. Skillfully employ a wide variety of teaching techniques. Effectively employ strategies of language assessment and evaluation

Cultural Competency

Exhibit sensitivity towards the sociopolitical, economic, cultural, and educational contexts in which English is taught around the world.

Professional Development

Display proficiency in accessing scholarly research for professional development and contributing to the body of research in the field of TESOL and Applied Linguistics.

Spiritual Formation

Articulate a personal theology concerning the question, “What does it mean to teach English in the name of Christ?”

In order to qualify, you must: Have a B.A. or B.S. from a regionally accredited college or university. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5. Submit an application with all required forms.
