Program Description:

The study of criminal justice begins with an analysis of the entire justice system as a force for social order. The Criminal Justice program at Wayne State University promotes a multidisciplinary understanding of the sources of criminal behaviors, including perspectives and contributions from criminology, psychology and sociology. Our curriculum provides students with a foundation for understanding factors related to crime and criminality, how the system responds to crime, appropriate methods for studying crime, and data-driven approaches used to address crime related problems. The analytical and research skills stressed by this program enable students to identify and assess the often conflicting objectives of criminal justice and investigate basic issues and practical problems in criminology and the administration of justice. The Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice is designed to prepare students for positions in criminal justice and related agencies as well as prepare students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice or related fields. Students are provided with a broad educational foundation in criminal justice grounded in law and the social sciences. Study begins with an analysis of crime and the entire justice system. Advanced study inquires into the political, organizational, social, and behavioral aspects of various components of the system of criminal justice. Research courses give students the tools with which to independently analyze issues of crime and justice as well as the requisite skills for career development. Courses are offered in the following core areas: contemporary criminal justice, causes of crime, research methodology and statistics, and a specialization of the student’s choice. Students can choose to enroll in a fully online program, a traditional classroom-based program or hybrid option. Fully online program students receive basic in-state tuition regardless of residence.
