Walden University is a private, for-profit, accredited online university. The university was founded in 1970 by two teachers, Bernie and Rita Turner, who collaborated with Harold Hodgkinson, a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley. Together, they sought a way for adults in the workforce to pursue their doctoral degrees. Moreover, they envisioned an institution that was both ‘student-centered’ and focused on positive social change.
Today, as ever, Walden continues to support the unique needs of adult learners. Look for masters, doctoral and certificate programs that span health sciences, counseling, criminal justice, human services, management, psychology, education, public health, nursing, social work, public administration, and information technology. Find programs that support the scholar-practitioner model and encourage students to apply their know-how for the common good.
Walden University values its diverse community of career professionals. It continues its mission to generate the opportunity for adult students to pursue a degree in the manner that suits their schedules. This links with a vision that graduates will not just be consumers of information, but will continue on to contribute to or effect positive social change.
