Program Description:

OVERVIEW 

The Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Technology online program offered by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is a 36-credit program designed to prepare persons in K-12, higher education, corporate, and military settings to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for the classrooms of tomorrow. Graduates of this program will have a much better understanding of the uses of technology and how they can be applied in instructional/training settings.

The program focuses on the theory, research and applications related to the field of educational technology and is intended to help individuals:

  • use instructional technology (computers, telecommunications and related technologies) as resources for the delivery of instruction;
  • serve as facilitators or directors of instructional technology in educational settings and/or be developers of instructional programs and materials for new technologies; and
  • design instructional materials in a variety of media.

 

In addition to earning an MEd in Educational Technology, students working in K-12 environments also have the opportunity to complete the Technology Leadership in Education (TLE) Certificate program.

An E-Learning Certificate is also available for individuals working in higher education or e-learning industries.

*Note: The GRE is no longer a requirement for admission to this program.

The MEd in Educational Technology program has been nationally recognized by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) through their Specialized Professional Association (SPA) program, the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT). -August 1, 2011

DEGREE PLAN

To earn an MEd in Educational Technology from UTRGV, students must complete 36 credits according to the following degree plan:

  • Curriculum and Instruction: 9 credits
  • Educational Technology: 18 credits
  • Electives: 9 credits
  • Total Required for Degree: 36 credits

 

DEGREE OPTIONS 

The MEd in Educational Technology is a 36-credit program. Students must complete the 27-credit required courses plus nine credits of electives. With Faculty Advisor approval, students can customize their Program of Study to meet their specific needs. We offer the following options:

  • Traditional
    This program of study allows students to select nine credits of electives in a specific content area such as educational technology, reading, mathematics, or science.
  • MEd + E-Learning Certificate
    This program of study allows students interested in teaching online in higher education or at e-learning industries the opportunity to earn an E-Learning Certificate.
  • MEd + Technology Leadership in Education (TLE) Certificate
    This program of study offers candidates the opportunity to earn the Technology Leadership in Education (TLE) Certificate.
  • MEd + E-Learning/Technology Leadership in Education Certificates
    This program of study allows you to earn the E-Learning and Technology Leadership in Education (TLE) Certifications without having to take additional coursework beyond the 36 credits.
  • Thesis
    This program of study is for students who are interested in research or intend to pursue a doctoral degree in the future.

 

The Program of Study (POS)
The Program of Study should be developed in consultation with the Faculty Advisor during the first semester of graduate work and must contain the following elements:

  • A brief narrative statement giving the overall objectives of the program and special certification desired.
  • Methods for achieving these objectives, i.e., courses listed in the degree plan, experiences, thesis and tentative research problems.
  • The proposed method and anticipated date of the final evaluation. 

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Apply to the UTRGV Graduate College:

  1. Submit a UTRGV Graduate Application at www.ApplyTexas.org. The university application fee of $50 ($100 for International Applicants) can be paid online by credit card or electronic check (in the online application). All application fees are nonrefundable.
  2. Register on the UTRGV Recommenders and Document Upload Webpage. This is where you will request recommenders and upload program requirement documents, and where the graduate office will upload your transcripts. If you do not complete this step, we will not be able to process your application.
  3. Request your transcripts and other supporting documentation to be mailed to:

Review and submit all Program Requirements:

  • Online application at www.ApplyTexas.org. The university application fee of $50 ($100 for International Applicants) can be paid online by credit card or electronic check (in the online application). All application fees are non-refundable.
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a recognized international equivalent in a similar or related field.
  • Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0. If applicant does not meet minimum undergraduate GPA criterion, GRE general test with minimum scores of 150 Verbal, 141 Quantitative, and 4.0 Analytical are required for conditional admission. GRE test scores are valid for five years.
  • Official transcripts from each institution attended (must be submitted directly to UTRGV).
  • Personal statement detailing professional goals and reasons for pursuing the graduate degree.
  • Resume including educational background and work experience.

 

Additional requirements for domestic applicants who attended foreign universities:

  • TOEFL or IELTS Language Proficiency Test with minimum scores: 550 on paper-based, 213 on computer based, or 79 on Internet-based for the TOEFL; 6.5 for the IELTS. TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years.
  • English translation of educational records.
  • Transcript Evaluation by the Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA).

 

Additional requirements for international applicants:

  • TOEFL or IELTS Language Proficiency Test with minimum scores: 550 on paper-based, 213 on computer based, or 79 on Internet-based for the TOEFL; 6.5 for the IELTS. TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years.
  • English translation of educational records.
  • Transcript Evaluation by the Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA).
  • Financial Documentation showing sufficient funds (minimum of $25,000) to cover all expenses (living and academic) for the first year of study.
  • Immigration documents, including a current copy of your valid passport.
