Degrees Offered:

Master of Science in Nursing

Format: Online

Program Description:

The online MSN from the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work Department of Nursing is the first graduate nursing program in the country to integrate nursing and social work practice. The program prepares family nurse practitioners to treat physical and behavioral health, address social and environmental factors, and lead positive social change.

Nursing@USC is designed for RNs who hold a bachelor’s degree and have at least one year of experience. The program prepares FNPs — nurses qualified to deliver many of the same services as physicians — with a focus on integrating the physical, behavioral, social and environmental factors that affect well-being. Graduates are trained to offer holistic care to infants, children, adolescents and adults throughout their lives.

Nursing@USC, the online Master of Science in Nursing, offers a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program to prepare advanced practice nurses who can deliver primary care to infants, children, adolescents and adults throughout their lives. Unlike any other nursing program, Nursing@USC is part of a social work school and integrates both nursing and social work disciplines. This pairing challenges students to consider a new approach to health care—one grounded in an understanding of the biomedical and social factors that influence patient well-being. Classes for the FNP program are held online, with clinical placements in or near your own community.

FNPs are advanced practice nurses who are qualified to deliver many of the same services as physicians, including:

  • Diagnosing and treating common health problems
  • Interpreting lab results and X-rays
  • Prescribing medications
  • Initiating and managing treatment plans
  • Providing patient education and counseling to promote wellness
  • Referring patients to other health professionals as needed

Nurse practitioners are in high demand as the need grows for more primary care providers to treat newly insured patients under the Affordable Care Act.
