Graduate Degree Programs
Graduate study is offered with specialization in the following areas:
•Environmental and Sanitary Engineering
•Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering
•Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics
The department offers master's and Ph.D. degrees, and graduate academic certificates. Distance students can earn master's degrees and certificates online with courses delivered by Engineering Outreach:
•Master of Science (30 credits, with thesis)
•Master of Engineering (33 credits, non-thesis)
•Doctor of Philosophy (in limited specialty areas) Certificate in Structural Engineering and in Water Resources Engineering (through Engineering Outreach)
Master of Science
Programs are offered in the specialized areas mentioned above. Applicants for admission generally will have a B.S. degree in civil engineering. However, those with B.S. degrees in areas other than civil engineering are also eligible for admission. This degree requires the preparation of an approved thesis.
Master of Engineering
A minimum of 33 credits is required. The other M.S. requirements apply. This study program includes the preparation of a technical paper.
Doctor of Philosophy
Persons interested in pursuing a doctoral degree must contact the Chair of the Civil Engineering Department well in advance of admission to the Graduate College. Preliminary screening of candidates and program planning for those admitted are essential features of the Ph.D. program. Programs are offered with specialization in the following general areas:
•Structures, Structural Mechanics and Construction Materials
•Transportation Engineering Water Resources and Hydraulics
The qualifying examination is written and/or oral, and the preliminary examination is written and oral. In addition, one of the following requirements must be satisfied:
•Satisfactory completion of a foreign language examination conducted by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
•Completion of a humanistic-social study program approved by the Department of Civil Engineering.
Candidates for graduate study must fulfill the requirements of the College of Graduate Studies and of the Department of Civil Engineering. See the College of Graduate Studies section of the catalog for the General Requirements applicable to each degree.
Course work requirements in each of the degree programs are relatively flexible depending on student interest and course availability. Financial assistance is available on a competitive basis in the form of instructional and graduate research assistantships. Students interested in graduate studies should select a specialty area in which they wish to study. Entrance requirements for the College of Graduate Studies apply. Foreign students must have a TOEFL score of 79 for admission to any departmental graduate degree program.
