Doctor of Athletic Training Degree
A.T. Still University is among the first in the nation to offer the prestigious Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) degree online. Graduates develop into academic and clinical leaders who help shape the future of athletic training in clinical and academic settings.
Doctors of Athletic Training are expert administrators, clinicians and educators developing, analyzing and implementing concrete solutions. They advance their expertise in orthopedic rehabilitation, clinical decision-making and professional leadership. These professionals play a key role in enhancing the delivery of athletic healthcare and improving health outcomes for physically active individuals and communities.
ATSU’s online athletic training degree is especially designed for those who seek a doctorate in athletic training and a terminal degree in athletic training, rather than a terminal academic degree (i.e. PhD) in a different area with an athletic training concentration.
The doctorate degree in athletic training through ATSU’s Arizona School of Health Sciences (ATSU-ASHS) is first to offer organized concentrations in Orthopedic Rehabilitation, Clinical Decision Making, Applied Research and Leadership to cultivate advanced levels of expertise. ATSU’s doctorate degree in athletic training is distinctive. It’s one of only a few post-professional degree programs in athletic training affiliated with a private medical and health professions university and housed within a school of health.
Who is a best fit for this advanced online athletic training degree? The majority of athletic trainers who are elite working professionals. Because they are embedded in a work setting while progressing through the curriculum, students receive a powerful educational benefit. They work with our nationally recognized faculty and create key relationships moving forward. Educators are equipped with the advanced graduate training necessary to effectively teach their own student trainers to succeed. Upon graduation, alumni of ATSU’s Master of Science in Athletic Training program already are 36% closer to obtaining their Doctor of Athletic Training. In a 36-month program, doctorate students actually can graduate 16 months earlier with advanced standing.
With a degree in athletic training, graduates excel in whatever role they choose through:
ATSU’s Doctor of Athletic Training degree is a terminal level degree. Because it is a post-professional degree, it surpasses the level of current, clinical/education focused accreditation standards. While the master’s program at ATSU is accredited, our doctorate is beyond those sets of standards.
Expertise and leadership in sports medicine not only is demonstrated throughout the program curriculum but also by ATSU’s people. Dr. Craig Phelps, ATSU President, was named NBA Physician of the Year prior to accepting his University position. Dr. Eric Sauers, Department Chair of ATSU’s DAT Program, also is Vice President of the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.
