Program Description:

The online Post-Master's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program infuses practice-focused doctoral education with innovation and practical clinical research and scholarship. This program serves academically talented nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, midwives, nurse anesthetists, nurse executives and educators.

Graduates of this program are prepared to transform practice, lead and engage in practical, clinically focused scholarship and research. The Post-Master's Doctor of Nursing Practice degree is a clinical doctorate requiring the completion of a scholarly project focusing on clinical nursing practice. The DNP scholarly project launches the nurse into scholarly practice and is a comprehensive, well-thought-out plan that focuses on a practice issue. The project is supported by one-credit courses embedded throughout the program that assist with topic development, project planning, and project implementation and evaluation. It can be completed in one year, preparing the student to utilize research for the improvement of clinical care delivery, patient outcomes, and system management. Graduates will be experts in designing, implementing, managing and evaluating healthcare delivery systems and will be prepared to lead at the highest clinical and executive ranks.

This unique online program maximizes the number of potential career roles the doctoral nursing graduate may assume, whether they are in academia, in advanced clinical practice, or in executive healthcare leadership. Classes are taught online and students are required to attend two weekend residencies structured to meet the scheduling requirements of busy working professionals. This cohort program is 39 credits and can be completed in a 3-year part-time sequence.


Sacred Heart University’s DNP is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), one of six regional associations in the United States that accredit schools. The doctoral program in is also accredited through June 2020.
