Program Description:

The M.Ed. in Counseling and Development is designed for students interested in a professional career in counseling in schools, private practice, group practice, and organizational settings. The degree is offered in the areas of Community Counseling and School Counseling. Both programs offer coursework for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). School counselors are certified by the Texas State Board of Educator Certification. The purpose of the degree is to provide theoretical knowledge and therapeutic skills used by counselors to help individuals or groups achieve goals and make adjustments in social, emotional, career and educational areas of their lives. The emphasis of the degree is on development of the practitioner's ability to use therapeutic processes, mental health, human development principles, and effective techniques of counseling. The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in School Counseling is designed to prepare educators who have a strong desire to help students succeed academically and to promote their well-being. School counselors focus their work on positive student development, especially high expectations, achievement motivation, and school engagement. Counselors help to build a caring and positive school climate, promote resiliency, provide support and guidance to students, and involve parents in schooling.


To be admitted to a program leading to a Master's degree in Counseling and Development or Special Education, students must fulfill the general requirements for admission to the Graduate College. Then the application would be reviewed by the chair of department.

International Student Requirements:

A baccalaureate degree in education or a related field is required for program admission as well as the submission of GRE scores. GPA and GRE scores are a major consideration for admission. The School Counselor program requires teaching experience. Candidates must meet Graduate College requirements and be accepted by the departmental graduate committee. Also The English proficiency certificate is mandatory.
