Program Information

Degrees Offered:

Executive Master's in Communication Innovation (M.S.)

Format: Hybrid

Program Description:

In today’s chaotic and rapidly shifting communications industry landscape, the elite and the unknown can change places overnight. To survive and thrive in this new media territory, we need people who understand it, grow with it, and contribute to its evolution. At Ithaca College, we’re helping accomplished professionals and high-potential leaders get ahead of the communications curve with a unique two-year virtual fellowship that leads to an executive master’s degree in communications innovation. Modeled after international new media think tanks and leading executive M.B.A. programs, the fellowship is designed to bring together working communications professionals from across the globe and the traditional industry silos to create the future of communications. Each year, we carefully select a diverse cohort of about a dozen inquisitive and successful communications professionals who have a broad array of industry, academic, and personal experiences and goals across broadcast/cable, development communications, entertainment media, educational technologies, film, corporate communications, advertising, public relations, digital /online media, gaming, and journalism. By collaborating with other talented peers, gaining exposure to new and global markets, and wrestling with real-time, pressing problems facing every aspect of our field, the fellows will master new skills and bring new ideas back to their workplace. The degree is designed with busy schedules in mind. Professionals can enroll in the program without leaving their jobs—required courses are offered in an asynchronous, rich online environment, while elective special topics seminars are scheduled as long-weekend “intensives” in residence at companies all over the globe. By leveraging our academic centers in Ithaca, Los Angeles, New York, and London, and our vast alumni connections, we will create unparalleled opportunities to gain access to executives, artists, innovators, and organizations that are creating the content and tools for next-generation media. The curriculum provides a foundation in media economics, systems modeling, human perception, storytelling, consumer behavior, research methods, product/interface design, global leadership, and relevant legal and ethical issues. This two-year program is not about delivering and memorizing content: it’s about creating the future. The courses are a platform for engaging in problem-based learning, stimulating original ways of thinking, and promoting new connections across nations, technologies, platforms, industries, and constituencies. This highly collaborative coursework culminates in a capstone research and development project that provides immediate value to the fellows and their employers. Fellows graduate from the program with a fully researched business plan, and are ready to introduce new entrepreneurial visions into the world.
