Program Description:

Concordia University–Portland has been preparing and educating teachers for over a century. Graduates from our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program are well equipped for today’s classroom—with the skills necessary to teach and assess effectively, work collaboratively, and encourage positive change in the school environment. 

Open to those living in the San Bernardino, CA area and interested in teaching at the elementary level (PreK-grade 8), Concordia University–Portland's online MAT program can be completed in 20 months. Coursework can be completed online, and the clinical experiences required to earn a MAT (practicum and student teaching) will be completed in a school setting in the San Bernardino area.

Once you successfully complete the program and receive your Oregon Preliminary Teaching License, you may use the Oregon license to fulfill the teacher-preparation program/teaching credential requirement of the preliminary licensure process for the state of California.

Culturally responsive practices are embedded throughout the program coursework, enhancing your ability to foster equity in the classroom and beyond. In addition, you will learn concepts, strategies, and practices to support English Language Learners (ELL) and construct environments that facilitate learning for non-native and bilingual speakers. Through practical application of learned concepts, you will be well prepared to work with and advocate for students and families. 

The online MAT program features:

•Small, dynamic cohorts and easily accessible faculty
•Accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
•Five semester program - complete in 20 months
•Online coursework with a live, virtual class once per week
•8-week practicum and 12-week student teaching clinical experiences
