Concordia University Online is a four-year private, not-for-profit, Christian college. Its Portland, Oregon location offers associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, doctorate degrees, and postgraduate certificates. Prospective graduate students can find online, hybrid, and on-campus options. In fall 2016, the student to faculty ratio at Concordia University, Portland was 17 to 1, enabling students to have more close-knit connections and interactions with teachers and classmates.v
Consistent with its Christian roots and the school’s devotion to serving communities, some of the school’s most popular programs are in education. The Concordia School of Education offers programs in the science of teaching, curriculum and instruction, TESOL, secondary education, education administration, and teaching specific subjects such as math and history, all of which engage students in opportunities to be of service.

Concordia University’s Mission

Concordia University Online
Concordia University Online offers several degrees entirely online through its College of Education:vi
- The Master of Education (M.Ed) in Curriculum and Instruction
- The Master of Education in Career and Technical Education
- The Master of Education in Educational Leadership
- The Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.)
And through its School of Management:
- The Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.)
Many of Concordia University’s online programs offer accelerated options that enable students to earn their master’s degrees in one, one-and-a-half, or two years. The amount of time it takes to earn the Doctorate of Education online depends on students’ specializations and whether or not they take courses concurrently.
The majority of graduate students at Concordia University Portland, 81 percent, were enrolled entirely in online education. Two percent were enrolled in at least some online education and 17 percent were enrolled entirely in on-campus programming.v
Concordia University online tuition is the same for online students as it is for on-campus students (though fees may differ).
Concordia University Majors
During the 2015-2016 school year, Concordia University Portland conferred 254 bachelor’s degrees, 3,473 master’s degrees, 41 doctorate degrees, and six postgraduate certificates.
Of the students earning master’s degrees that year, the large majority, 2,305 students, did so in Curriculum and Instruction. After that, the most commonly earned degrees that year were in:v
- Educational Leadership and Administration (557 degrees conferred)
- Special Education and Teaching (189 degrees conferred)
- Elementary Education and Teaching (93 degrees conferred)
- Business Administration and Management (86 degrees conferred)
- Secondary Education and Teaching (75 degrees conferred)
- Technical Teacher Education (70 degrees conferred)
With the exception of the degree programs in Elementary and Secondary Education and Teaching, all of the above-mentioned degrees were offered through entirely online or hybrid programming.
The most commonly earned degree at the doctorate level in 2015-2016 was in Law. This program was not offered online at Concordia University that year.v
The few students who earned postgraduate certificates during the 2015-2016 school year did so in Educational Leadership and Administration and Special Education and Teaching. Postgraduate certificates can enhance or specialize an existing master’s degree or help prospective students assess whether or not they want to study a particular subject.v
Enrollment at Concordia University
In fall 2016, Concordia University had 5,455 total students. Of those students, 1,197 were undergraduate students and 4,258 were graduate students.
Of the graduate students, 83 percent attended classes part-time and 17 percent attended classes full-time.v
Admissions to Concordia University
For admission to Concordia University’s graduate program, students must consult the requirements of their particular program. However, there are some general admissions requirements for all programs. Across the board, applicants must submit:
- An online application
- Transcripts from previously attended schools
- Letters of recommendation
- A statement of intent
- A resume
- Test scores (when required by the program)
- In most cases, evidence of a 2.8 GPA or higher from the applicant’s undergraduate school
In addition, applicants may have to interview with a graduate program director.
Concordia University Tuition
Based on the graduate tuition rate in the 2017-2018 school, tuition for an entire degrees was as follows:ii
- The Master of Education (based on a 34-credit program): $17,840-$23,698
- The Masters of Arts in Teaching (based on a 39-credit program): $21,102-$27,190
- The Master of Business Administration: $26,316-$35,720
- The Master of Arts in International Development and Service: $54,400-$59,900
- The Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages: $15,600-$18,110
- The Master of Arts in Psychology: Community Psychology: $19,680-$25,640
- The Doctorate of Education (based on a 59-credit program): $34, 644-$40,720
- The Juris Doctor: $975 per credit-hour
Added to these costs could be additional technology and students fees as well as costs for books and materials. Keep in mind that inflation will likely increase the costs of tuition each year.
Concordia University Portland tuition is the same of online, on-campus, and hybrid students.
Concordia University Accreditation
Concordia University has institutional accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. It has specialized accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
In addition, the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission has approved Concordia Portland’s teacher education programs, and Concordia’s School of Management belongs to the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and is a candidate for accreditation.iii
Concordia University Portland Ranking
Teacher.org ranked Concordia University’s M.Ed. in Administration program among the top 10 in the nation in 2016. Of the Concordia University masters programs online, this program was its second most popular.iv
