City University of Seattle's M.Ed. in Reading and Literacy is a graduate degree program designed for individuals who wish to become a reading specialist, literacy coach or literacy leader in a global learning community. As part of this program, WA teachers can also earn their Professional Certification. Developed using the most up-to-date research available and offering the newest perspectives on literacy in real classroom situations, this program teaches you how to integrate the literacy skills of reading, writing, speaking, viewing and representing visually across your curriculum. With a focus on language acquisition, current methodology, assessment, culture and diversity, you will build strong teaching skills that positively impact your students' learning. Together with other teachers, you will gain the skills needed to develop a supportive learning environment for ELL, special education, gifted and at-risk students. Successful completion of this program and the WEST-E for Reading leads to a reading endorsement for educators in Washington State (with reciprocity for transfer to certain other states). Graduation qualifies you to seek advancement as a literacy coach or reading specialist. Completion of the optional Professional Certification meets state Washington requirements for teachers.
