MASTER OF ARTS IN THEOLOGY
CDU’s Master of Arts (M.A.) in Theology provides serious study of theology, moral principles, the sacramental system, spirituality, and the history of the Church among other subjects. Many students choose the M.A. solely as a way to increase their knowledge of the Catholic Faith, as well as to bring that knowledge to their families, careers, or individual lives. The M.A. program is also useful for individuals seeking careers in church work, or who are already involved in teaching or religious education, or are preparing for a religious vocation.
Students admitted to the M.A. program complete a core curriculum (19 credits) and, in consultation with a faculty advisor, select a concentration area (15 concentration credits and 5 five elective credits) in one of four areas: Sacred Scripture, Philosophy/Theology, Ecclesial Service, or Catholic Culture. In addition to coursework, students will also complete the following:
*A prerequisite course, The Basics of Catholicism: Faith, Life & Prayer, unless waived by the academic dean
*Graduate Writing Skills (ENG 500) and Graduate Research Skills ( ENG 501)
*A written comprehensive exam on each of the core courses
*A written comprehensive exam on each of the concentration courses
*Completion of a research paper of approximately thirty pages on a topic related to the area of concentration, to be submitted after all course work is completed. Students enroll in Thesis Direction and consult with an advisor to select a topic and complete within six months.
