Master of Social Work Program

Program Information

Degree Offered:

Master of Social Work Program

Format: Hybrid

Program Description:

Asbury University’s Master of Social Work Program began in 2008 and has graduated over 175 students.  Our program provides a well-rounded social work education where students build a strong mental, spiritual, academic and social foundation for their profession.  Our faculty offers diverse practice areas, along with international experience, small class size and personal attention.  Our motto is:  ‘Abiding in Christ, Serving Others, Transforming the World.’  Being a Christian university, our classes are taught through the lens of our Wesleyan Holiness foundation and students learn to incorporate their faith into their profession.  We are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and offer two (2) concentrations:  Child and Family Services and School Social Work.

We offer both the Advanced Standing and Standard programs.  For our on campus program, Advanced Standing students begin in either spring or summer term.  For the standard on campus program, students begin in either the spring or fall term.  Most on campus students choose the full time program, although part-time is available as well.  Because Asbury is located just 12 miles south of Lexington, KY, we offer over 80 field placement sites in the greater metropolitan area.

Beginning in the fall of 2017, we will have an online, part-time MSW program.  At least two (2) classes will be offered each semester, and the field experience will be offered the second and fourth years of the standard program and the second year of the advanced standing program.  There will be several classes offered in mid-May that will require students to come to Asbury’s campus for an intensive class, lasting one week.  We will work with students to find a field placement close to their place of residence.

Admission requirements include the following:  application, character & fitness statement, autobiographical statement, 3 letters of recommendation, and transcripts from all colleges attended.  The cumulative grade point requirement for the standard program is 2.75 and for the advanced standing program is 3.25.  Students must also have taken 3 prerequisites prior to beginning the program: introduction to psychology, introduction to sociology, and a statistics class.   Students wishing to be admitted into the advanced standing program must also graduate from a CSWE accredited Bachelor of Social Work Program, submit a conceptual framework essay and a copy of their final field evaluation from their BSW Program.
