Learning and Behavior Disorders
he Online Education program is designed to provide busy, working adults with an opportunity to complete a master's degree in education. The Initial and Alternative Certification is for students who already hold a bachelor's degree in a content area and are interested in obtaining teaching credentials as an educator in the schools. The Additional Certification with the master's degree is for students who already hold a teaching license. They may complete the program for additional certification. The Optional Rank 1 Program is for students pursuing Rank 1 status or 30 hours of a planned program above the master's degree. Students who complete the Learning Behavior Disorders P-12 program are licensed for all 12 grades in a cross-categorical special education program that includes specific learning disabilities, emotional behavior disabilities, and mild mental disabilities. Students who already hold secondary licensure can attach the Learning Behavior Disorders 8-12 endorsement.

Facilitators of Student Success
Facilitators of Student Success, the theme of the conceptual framework and the teaching philosophy of the School of Education, guides all educator preparation programs. Asbury University educator preparation programs equip candidates with the knowledge and skills to guide 21st century learners, facilitate learning through mentoring models, and to guide P-12 student achievement.
Candidates model learner-based instruction emphasizing the value of each P-12 student’s achievement. The goal is to help every candidate in education "think like a teacher." The program, by incorporating authentic experiences and clinical practices, helps the candidate develop skills to design instruction, assess student learning, analyze student progress and achievement, diagnose learning needs, and prescribe for personalized learning plans. Two features define the types of clinical experiences in the program: (1) Course-Embedded school experiences with a range of authentic activities, and (2) Extended School Experiences in which each program contains multiple school-based experiences. As part of this experience, all candidates complete a total of 200 clinical hours prior to student teaching or the professional semester in order to gain confidence and competence
School of Education programs emphasize moral and ethical strength and integrity, teaching and leading as a calling, and professional thinking as a demonstration of passion and enthusiasm for teaching. The dispositional framework of educator preparation programs is linked to facilitating student success.
School of Education faculty care about preparing highly qualified educators. All education faculty have experience as P-12 teachers and leaders, and bring real-world experience and professional expertise to the learning environment.
How the Program is Delivered
The program is delivered online in dynamic, interactive web-based learning environments. Courses include live, synchronous web-conferencing experiences that connect students to faculty and each other. Project-based and collaborative activities provide an engaging learning experience that is highly relational. Students also benefit from interactions with distinguished practitioners from within the profession who connect with students virtually through the learning management system.
Students have the option of beginning the program at multiple entry points (Fall term, Spring term, Summer Terms). Students typically complete 6-9 credit hours each semester. Courses are typically delivered in 7 week blocks.
How the Program will Benefit Me
Completion of the program requirements will lead to a master's degree and/or Kentucky licensure. Certifications can be transferred to other states. Students benefit from clinical experiences in multiple, diverse schools and exposure to different student groups. Through the program, students have opportunities to connect with school leaders, educators and other key stakeholders.
