Master of Arts in Liberal Studies
The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program provides an intellectually challenging educational experience with opportunities for connecting and applying knowledge across humanities, fine arts, social science and natural science disciplines.
The program is designed to enrich students’ personal and professional lives and the quality of their service. Students will develop an integrated knowledge of the contemporary world rooted in an understanding of the humanities, sciences, and arts. They will develop the creative, analytical, and research skills to confront questions, solve problems, and face challenges in a variety of fields.
The MALS program recognizes that real world complex issues are often too broad to approach from a single perspective. The emphasis of the MALS program on interdisciplinary learning moves faculty and students beyond the perspectives of any individual discipline.
Building on Lourdes’ foundations of liberal learning, this program encourages creativity in teaching and learning and collaboration among students and faculty. Each course integrates two or more specific academic disciplines.
The MALS is a two-and-a-half year program consisting of 11 courses. In their first year, students take five courses exploring the development of the liberal studies disciplines and the roots of their scholarly methods. The second year provides opportunities for developing and applying specific disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives in analyzing perennial and contemporary issues. Students conclude the program with a capstone project or thesis that uses multidisciplinary knowledge, values, and methods of inquiry.
The program seeks to cultivate an appreciation for the world of ideas while encouraging personal growth, professional enhancement for a variety of careers, and a deepening commitment to the service of others.
Lourdes University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
