Giving Back to the Community
Saint Bonaventure University was founded in the Franciscan tradition, meaning that social justice and service are values they strive to uphold. SBU encourages members of its academic community to dedicate their skills and time to giving back. For example, St Bonaventure University’s program BonaResponds was launched to assist with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, and has expanded to include other similar community needs. Students may also volunteer with The Warming House, which has the honor of being one of the oldest soup kitchens run by students in the United States.
Diversity at Saint Bonaventure University
St. Bonaventure University strives not just to cultivate, but to celebrate their diverse and multicultural school community. They support this goal through school and community resources, including the following.
- The Center for Arab and Islamic Studies (CAIS): Established in 2015, CAIS seeks to promote understanding of Islam and Arab cultures both historical and contemporary.
- The Damietta Center: Hosts programs, services and facilities on campus, such as the Black Student Union, Latino Student Union, ASIA, and more.
- The Franciscan Center for Social Concern: The Franciscan Center works with members of the SBU community to address social issues and encourage social consciousness.
- Arthur O Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program: This program is jointly sponsored with New York State, and strives to help provide access to higher education in the state to people in need.
SBU Athletics
When you’re not in class or volunteering, join your faculty and fellow students in supporting the Bonnies! SBU competes in NCAA Division I, with men’s and women’s sports teams including football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, golf, track and field, tennis, and more.

Mission, Vision and Values
St Bonaventure University’s mission is to help each student reach their academics, personal and spiritual potential, prepare for their careers, and uphold the Franciscan values of citizenship and service. They also strive to uphold their core values of Discovery, Community, and Individual Worth.
Admissions:
SBU offers 18 masters degree and certificate programs to more than 400 graduate students. These are housed in the School of Arts & Sciences, School of Business, School of Education, and the Jandoli School of Communication. The prerequisites for admission may vary in each school or for individual programs, so if you’re looking for information about prerequisites, GPA requirements, or acceptance rates, it may be helpful to reach out to the school in question.
To get started, consider this general list of requirements. However, bear in mind that your specific application process may look a little different.
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
- Graduate admissions test scores (such as GRE, GMAT, etc)

SBU offers graduate education in business, education, and communication. These programs may be offered online, on their main campus in Olean, NY, or at their Hilbert College location. Each program is designed to help students hone the professional skills and academic knowledge they may need to achieve their career goals. Specific program and format availability is subject to change.
Program Spotlight: Masters in Business Administration
St. Bonaventure University offers its MBA program both on campus and online. It can be completed in as little as 20 months, and includes three more tailored tracks (Accounting, Finance, and Marketing) in addition to a general business track.
Earning your MBA at SBU means you’d have the opportunity to hone leadership and management skills while also building expertise in essential business functions and practices. Concentrating in one of the three available focus areas could enable students to center their studies on the skills and knowledge they’d need in their ideal career path.
The program culminates in a capstone course, which allows students to demonstrate their ability to apply their learning in a real-world scenario to solve problems. Students are also able to build up their portfolio over the course of their studies, which could be useful in marketing oneself later on.
While the MBA program at Saint Bonaventure does require the GMAT, some students may be waived from this requirement. In order to qualify for a GMAT waiver, you’d need to provide evidence of an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.3, compelling credentials (such as significant work experience) or already hold an equivalent credential.
