Our Educational Leadership programs prepare you for leadership positions in education and policy at all levels. The demands of effective leaders are increasingly complex, requiring collaboration with multiple sectors and communities. The curricula address those complexities by including a solid grounding in understanding multiple perspectives and working through a cross-sector approach in a multicultural environment.
Our degree programs share many common elements:
- a focus on urban education; a concern for social justice and equity
- coursework and applied learning that is cross-sector by design
- a strong community of faculty and students
- opportunities to engage with faculty and researchers through Steinhardt's numerous centers and institutes
- New York City as an important laboratory in which to learn and practice education leadership and policy
The MA in Educational Leadership: School Building Leader program prepares you for leadership in urban schools as a principal or teacher leader. The program leads to NY State certification as a school building leader (assistant principal or principal) with reciprocity in most other states.
The MA in Educational Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy program prepares you to work toward social and education equity through leadership positions in educational organizations that work in and around schools.
The Post-Master’s Advanced Certificate in Educational Leadership: School District Leader is ideal if you are interested in leadership opportunities as a superintendent or other district-level administrator.
The PhD and EdD prepare you for a career as a professor or researcher, or for positions as a leader in the practicing profession.
Study abroad programs in Argentina, South Africa, and Ghana provide opportunities to study educational leadership, policy, and reform.
