Graduate programs in Dance Education - Master
Founded by legendary dance educator Martha Hill in 1932, our Dance Education program is one of the most prestigious in North America. Our goal is to develop creative and critical thinking abilities, thereby increasing knowledge and expertise in dance and dance education. Our approach integrates the developing mind and body in the context of cultural practices. Fieldwork is integral to learning, and affords you the opportunity to analyze educational models, exercise researcher skills, develop professional networks, and awaken to the “realistic idealism” that propels the future of arts education.
Our MA in Teaching Dance, All Grades, prepares teachers who are eligible for NY State initial (40 credits) or professional (34 credits) teacher certification as a teacher of dance for grades pre-K-12. Our 36-credit MA in Teaching Dance in the Professions is ideal if you wish to teach dance in colleges, universities, or professional studios, or pursue doctoral study. This program also offers a unique concentration, in collaboration with American Ballet Theatre, in ABT Ballet Pedagogy. If you enroll in the 16-month full-time only ABT Ballet Pedagogy concentration you’ll study with ABT faculty at their studios in Manhattan, in addition to taking coursework with NYU dance education faculty. If you already have an MA or MFA in Dance and wish to be certified in Teaching Dance, All Grades, consider our Advanced Certificate in Dance Education. This program can be completed in as little as one year and as few as 22 credits.
Our faculty includes Susan R. Koff (director), Miriam Roskin Berger, Martie Barylick, Patricia Cohen, Deborah Damast, Diane Duggan, Douglas Dunn, Kimberly Elliott, Carla Flores, Suzanne Lamberg, Claire Porter, John-Mario Sevilla, and Carolyn Webb.
We offer opportunities each year to perform, choreograph, produce, and direct dance concerts for various audiences. An intersession abroad course in Uganda is offered each January.
Generous scholarships are available.
