Advanced Certificate in Teaching Dance-All Grades
Join our close-knit, inclusive, and passionate community of aspiring dance educators in NYC! Integrate artistry, performance, and research with the latest in teaching practices. Become a leader in dance studios, schools, or in higher education.
The program was founded by legendary dance educator Martha Hill in 1932. Our approach integrates the developing mind and body in the context of cultural practices. Fieldwork is integral to learning; you’ll have opportunities to analyze educational models, exercise researcher skills, develop professional networks, and awaken to the “realistic idealism” that propels the future of arts education.
Our MA in Teaching Dance, All Grades (Pre-K to 12), prepares dance teachers who are eligible for NY State initial (40 credits) or professional (34 credits) teacher certification. Our Dual MFA in Dance / MA in Teaching Dance Pre-K to 12 prepares you for a career as a professional dancer and for NY State initial teacher certification. Our 36-credit MA in Teaching Dance in the Professions is ideal if you wish to teach dance in colleges, universities, or professional studios, or pursue doctoral study. This program also offers a unique concentration, in collaboration with American Ballet Theatre, in ABT Ballet Pedagogy. If you possess an MA or MFA in Dance and wish to be certified in Teaching Dance, All Grades, consider our Advanced Certificate, which can be completed in as little as one year and 22 credits.
Our faculty includes Susan R. Koff (director), Miriam Roskin Berger, Martie Barylick, Barry Blumenfield, Patricia Cohen, Kelvin Cooper, Deborah Damast, Diane Duggan, Douglas Dunn, Kimberly Elliott, Carla Flores, Suzanne Lamberg, Richard Magill, Claire Porter, Belinda Saenz, John-Mario Sevilla, Randi Sloan, and Carolyn Webb.
We offer opportunities each year to perform, choreograph, produce, and direct dance concerts for various audiences. A study abroad course in Uganda is offered each January.
