Program Information

Degrees Offered:

Master of Science Basic Medical Sciences (Accelerated and Traditional)

Format: Campus

Program Description:

This interdisciplinary program of study leads to the degree of Master of Science in Basic Medical Sciences. The student is exposed to a broad range of fields and is expected to develop an integrated knowledge that cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries. The interdisciplinary M.S. degree program, offering two separate tracks, is particularly suitable for students wishing to prepare for a career in medicine, dentistry, or other health professions. The 'traditional' track is a two year program consisting entirely of evening classes while the 'Accelerated' track allows highly qualified candidates to take pre-clinical medical school courses during the day and complete the didactic portion of the program within one year.

Basic Medical Sciences-Accelerated

Unique among the Graduate School’s various M.S. degree programs, the interdisciplinary Master of Science in Basic Medical Sciences is offered in a special one-year accelerated track. In this accelerated post-baccalaureate pre-medical program, students take selected pre-clinical medical school courses alongside our first-year School of Medicine students and are able to complete the degree requirements within one year. This enables them to apply to medical school earlier than in a traditional program and therefore launch their careers sooner. This is not a post-baccalaureate program in the traditional sense; it is considered an academic enhancer for students who wish to improve their credentials and preparedness for admission to medical school.

As the accelerated track is highly rigorous, admission is very competitive and limited to only 15-25 students per year. This allows our faculty advisors to work closely with the students to ensure they meet the degree requirements and provide them with comprehensive guidance concerning their applications to medical school. Although there is no guarantee of acceptance to New York Medical College’s School of Medicine or any other medical school, students who have successfully completed the didactic portion of the program enjoy an impressive medical school acceptance rate of greater than 90 percent.

Basic Medical Sciences–Traditional

The traditional program track is for students intending to apply for admission to a variety of professional programs such as medicine, dentistry, physician’s assistant, veterinary, or to programs linked to a research career. This competitive program exposes students to a broad range of fields that cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries. The design of this program allows students to strengthen their knowledge base in core disciplines, enhance written and oral communication skills, and gain self-directed learning skills. Students are closely mentored by faculty of the medical and graduate schools. Courses are scheduled in the late afternoon/evening, allowing students the opportunity to work during the day or participate in activities that supplement their application to professional programs.

Recent graduates of the program have enrolled in medical school (LCME-accredited allopathic schools, osteopathic schools, Caribbean schools), dental school, ARC-PA accredited physician assistant programs and nursing school, joined the pharmaceutical industry, and entered doctoral programs.
