Format: Campus

Program Description:

The 44-credit M.S.Ed. in Special Education: Adolescence Generalist with an Autism Concentration is for students with prior certification in education who are seeking to extend their scope of knowledge and expertise in the field of special education. It leads to a Master of Science degree and eligibility for initial NYS Certification in Students with Disabilities, grades 7 - 12. It prepares students to teach in inclusive or self-contained special education classrooms and resource rooms at the middle and high school level, with a special emphasis on teaching students with autism spectrum disorders. Students will receive a special LIU certificate attesting to their completion of four courses in the field of autism.

Students graduating from this program are eligible for teaching certification once they have passed all required portions of the New York State Teacher Certification Exam (NYSTCE). Students may also apply for Internship Certification in special education after completing the first 22 credits. Internship Certification permits students to begin teaching while they complete their degrees.
