Pharmacology is the scientific discipline that seeks to understand how drugs interact with living organisms. At Cornell, research in pharmacology is focused on signal transduction, the process by which living systems respond to environmental cues. We study the mechanism, regulation, and physiological consequences of signal transduction to understand the mechanism of drug action and to spur drug discovery. We are a community of faculty trainers that encourage and facilitate research that is innovative, interdisciplinary and addresses important biological problems. We will provide training in the principles of modern pharmacology, help you to develop scientific communication skills, and promote your career development.
The training program engages faculty from across the Cornell campus. Although its home base is in the College of Veterinary Medicine, with members from the Departments of Molecular Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, and Microbiology & Immunology, participants also include faculty from Chemistry & Chemical Biology, Neurobiology & Behavior and Applied Engineering & Physics. Faculty are engaged in research in cancer biology, infectious disease, receptor and ion channel structure and function, neurodegenerative disease, cell growth and homeostasis, and developmental biology. Biomedically relevant research questions are studied in a variety of model organisms and are attacked with interdisciplinary approaches that include molecular and cellular biology, genetics, chemical and structural biology, and biophysics.
Pharmacology is one of five graduate fields associated with the Biological & Biomedical Sciences (BBS) Graduate Program. As an umbrella program, the BBS fosters an atmosphere of collaboration, focusing on the interface between scientific research and clinical practice as well as a commitment to animal and human health.
Funding: The Pharmacology Program only admits students who will be funded for the duration of their program (contingent upon satisfactory performance). An application to the program is considered an application for funding.
