Program Description:

The Western New York Teacher Residency is an innovative approach to training the next generation of teachers for urban education settings. If you’ve thought about pursuing a teaching career, the WNY Teacher Residency may be for you. Modeled after a medical residency program, Canisius' new WNY Teacher Residency is an intensive 2-yr apprenticeship that pairs rigorous coursework with structured field experiences, under the mentorship of a master teacher. The program is designed for people without any formal education background and is open to all undergraduate majors.

Program Highlights:

  • Earn NYS Dual Certification in Childhood/Special Education in just 24 months.
  • A Teacher Residency Scholarship that covers 30% of graduate tuition
  • A living wage stipend of $20,000 provided during the second year
  • Discounted on-campus housing 
  • Preferred substitute teacher status in year 1 enabling residents to work during the program
  • 3 year teaching position at partner schools following completion of the program
