PhD: There is no terminal masters program, although a masters degree is earned en route to the PhD.
The goal of the Doctoral program in Clinical Psychology is to train sensitive and caring psychologists who are also scientists, prepared to pursue new knowledge and objective answers to the complex questions surrounding the assessment and treatment of human mental-health needs. The expectation of students is that they will be well-trained in research methodology and able to translate the empirical knowledge of psychology as a scientific discipline into skilled and effective research and/or practice. Members of our faculty have conducted research with anxiety disorders, dementia, depression, autism, schizophrenia, drug and alcohol addiction, developmental disorders, and in numerous other subjects. We emphasize close training with professors, preparing students for research-based employment through experience. We recognize that Clinical Psychology has many points of contact with other branches of Psychology, and so we encourage an integrated course of study across the discipline that is also highly individualized to suit a student’s interests. The diversity of experience in our faculty allows students to explore new approaches and ideas, while also gaining the expertise in their chosen areas of focus. The program combines course work, research training, and clinical training in a developmental progression that allows for increasing independence, responsibility, and self-determination in areas of specialization. We view students as "junior colleagues" who collaborate with faculty in research and who are encouraged to engage in the activities that would be expected of a productive professional – attending and presenting at conferences, publishing research, reviewing manuscripts for journals, writing grant proposals, consulting about clinical cases, developing innovative programs, and so on. We invite you to visit the Graduate School of Psychology website to explore faculty profiles and research, and to see what else Binghamton’s program has to offer.
