Program Description:

At Binghamton University we prepare graduate students to participate in the future of political science. Whether you are earning your M.A. or your Ph.D. you will develop a broadly-based theoretical understanding of political behavior and institutions, and you will learn how to carry out systematic empirical analysis. You will work with faculty whose research ranges from political representation to international relations and conflict; from the psychology of judicial decision-making to international human rights practices. • The Ph.D. program culminates in a dissertation, and students are educated as scholars who will contribute to the development of political science through careers in teaching and research. You will choose areas of focus and work with expert faculty within those subjects, with ample opportunity to pursue your own research. • M.A. students receive advanced training to prepare them for policy analysis, journalism, private industry, or other professional careers, as well as future doctoral work. The program culminates either in a thesis or a comprehensive exam within the student’s area of focus. Binghamton’s Department of Political Science is an international leader in the discipline. It was rated in the top 20 by the 2010 National Research Council Study, and 19th in the world by the Hix study. Recent graduates of the program now teach at institutions including the University of Oklahoma, University of Georgia, University of Mississippi, University of Missouri, University of New Orleans, Kansas State University, Keuka College and South Texas College.
