Degrees Offered:

Mathematical Sciences - Doctorate

Format: Campus

Program Description:

For the Department of Mathematical Sciences, pure and applied mathematics are integrally linked. Members of our faculty work in subjects as diverse as combinatorics, algebra, graph theory, functional analysis, dynamic systems, and geometry/topology. We also have a very strong program in probability and statistics. Because we have a small program, we encourage our students to work closely with their professors, and to take part in research that will prepare them for success. The research interests of our faculty involve the application of mathematical concepts to data analysis, computer testing, epidemiology, population studies, business, civil engineering, and even to mapping the human Genome. Possibilities are truly unbounded for future mathematics graduates. M.A. students gain a solid basis for future doctoral work, or for careers in government, industry, or community college teaching. The program usually requires two years of study. Ph.D. students prepare for university or college teaching and for high-level employment in government and industry. The duration of the program varies based on the student. A previous M.A. is not a requirement for entrance to the Ph.D. program, so students with exemplary undergraduate experience are encouraged to apply. The University also offers education degrees for students wishing to teach mathematics in the state of New York at a high school level. Visit the Graduate School of Education’s website for specific information about the M.A.T. and M.S.Ed. programs. We hope you will visit Binghamton’s Graduate School website to learn more about us. And please further explore our faculty’s research and interests at our Graduate School website.
