Program Description:

Whether they are studying the hidden forces that cause earthquakes, or searching for ancient DNA in water droplets embedded in salt crystals, our students and faculty explore the rich science of our planet. Binghamton University’s graduate programs in Geological Sciences are built around student research aimed at publishable results. You will receive personal attention from faculty, whose areas of research include • Seismology • Geophysics • Sedimentology • Hydrology • Environmental Geochemistry • Neotectonics The M.S. degree prepares students for careers in industry or government, or for future Ph.D. work. It is a two year program, with thesis research comprising most of the second year. A previous B.S. in Geology is preferable, but students with B.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, and Engineering are also encouraged to apply. The Ph.D. is a 4-5 year program that includes course work and a dissertation. It prepares students for research, education at a university level, or for higher-level employment in government and industry. Students at Binghamton also have opportunities to do field research, and hands-on lab experience.
